Top Six Cyber Security Attacks During Covid-19

The cyberattack resulted in the exposure of some data, including client information. However, the law firm confirms that the impact of the incident was limited, and the attackers only managed to access roughly 0.2% of its data. DataBreaches.net speculated it was a ransomware attack, and the law firm paid the attackers a ransom to get the stolen data removed from their leak website. AI Jazeera Repels Cyber Attacks The Qatar-based media network claims to have overcome a series of cyberattacks intended to “access, disturb and control” some of its news platforms and websites. The hacking was attempted between June 5 and June 8, peaking on June 6 before they screen an Al Jazeera Arabic’s Ma Khafia Atham documentary series. The media platform experienced continued electronic attacks, including DDoS, account hijacking, and malware. JBS Ransome Attack The world’s largest meat supplier JBS experienced cyber attacks on May 31. The incident caused data breaches in its North American and Australian systems. Therefore JBS suspended both its US and Australian systems temporarily. JBS USA Holdings Inc. had to pay an $11 million ransom demand on June 10 after consulting with cybersecurity experts. The massive payment was made in Bitcoin, one of the most significant ransomware payments of all time. Colonial Pipeline Cyber Attack The colonial pipeline cyberattack in late April had the most news covered. The news of the colonial cyber attack made an essential impact because the pipeline is a part of the national critical infrastructure system. In addition, the attack impacted most Americans due to gasoline shortages. The  DarkSide gang was behind this attack and targeted the firm’s billing system and internal business network. To avoid further disruption, Colonial Pipeline eventually gave 4.4 million dollars in bitcoin. Brenntag Data Breach In May 2021, similar to the Acer attack, REvil gang also attacked Quanta, a computer manufacturer, in April 2021. The gang demanded $50 million as a ransom. Quanta is one of Apple’s primary business partners, and after refusing to pay the ransom amount to REvil group, they targeted Apple. The attacker leaked Apple product blueprints obtained from Quanta and other sensitive data. Quanta Ransom Attack The hacker group that targeted Colonial Pipeline also attacked Brenntag, a chemical distribution company. The Darkside stole 150 GB worth of data and demanded 7.5 million dollars in bitcoin as ransomware. Brenntag caved to the demands and ended up paying $4.4 million. Acer Attack May 2021 also witnessed an attack on the computer manufacture Acer by the REvil hacker group. The attacker demanded $50 million ransom, which is one of the largest known to date. In addition, the attackers exploited the Microsoft Exchange server to get access to Acer’s files and leaked images of sensitive financial documents and spreadsheets. KIA Motors Ransom Attack KIA Motors, a subsidiary of Hyundai was reported a ransomware attack. The attacker gang demanded a $20 million ransom against sensitive data. 533 million Phone Numbers Leaked A threat actor was published that phone numbers and account details of 533 million Facebook users leaked and published on the dark web. The information leaked includes Facebook ID numbers, profile names, email addresses, location information, gender details, job data.
